Back from Comic Con!

Just got back yesterday from the San Diego Comic Con and had a great time. This was the third year of exhibiting and its always an amazing experience. Kyle and I collaborated again and put together a follow up to the Children's book we did last year. We weren't going to do Tshirts again this year but at the very last minute (literally days before the con) we got the bug to do some. It was so last minute that we had these delivered to us on Thursday at the Con. These must have been printed in the span of two days.

Kyle had brought his T-shirt that he had debuted at the LA Myth art show. His robot transforming taco truck was a crowd favorite. Wouldn't this be an awesome toy?
This year Kyle got together with the inspiring and talented Frank Rocco and they put out their comic book, Rock Paper Scissors. This has got to be one of the funniest comic books I've read in awhile. One person liked it so much she came back and bought a second copy for her brother.
Last but not least our boothmate, James Burks was previewing his book which is set to be published by Yen press. His book should be available in all the big bookstore chains next year. This is the full length story of his charming Gabby and Gator paperback that he's been selling at the Con for the last three years.

So last thursday for the Downtown LA artwalk Kyle and I had a video installation showing at the Spring Arts Collective. It was great. We had two projections showing experimental short films that Kyle and I made. Kyle made a zoetrope of himself doing the robot. It was crazy. A ton of people came in and saw the piece. Here's an example of one of my shorts:

My friend Vince is a Video Artist and DJ that goes by the name of HearSee. He has a really cool installation where people can draw with light on a mesh surface. Recently he exhibited at the Spring Arts Collective during Downtown Los Angeles' monthly ArtWallk. I've been following him around and shooting him with my Canon HV20 and have put the footage together as a promo piece for him. The software he is using is called Lasertag developed by Graffiti Research Lab. Check it out:

I've had this picture taking jones since I got back from San Francisco. As you can see I've discovered the "overdo color" filter in photoshop. I wish I had a real deal camera but until I save up for one my camcorder will have to do. I've been taking these photos with my Canon HV20's still photo mode. Its a dinky 3 mega pixel but the images it takes aren't bad. Here are some more I've put up on flickr: Joe's HV20 pics.

I had a great time this year attending San Francisco's Wondercon comic book convention at the Moscone Center. We met a lot of nice people and hopefully got the word out on our book "The Hard Knock Life of Knuckles McGee". Here are some pictures from the trip: WONDERCON2008

I will be attending the San Diego Comic Con this year with my friends Kyle Neswald and James Burks. We will not be in Small Press this year so I'll list the booth once I find out which number it is.

After a long respite from blogging I come back and my first post is... a dang plug. Yes, I know I'm a shameless shill. Don't think of this as an ad. Think of it as an invitation... yeah that's it! I invite you to come to Wondercon this weekend and hang out with me and my good friends Kyle Neswald and Kristin Donner. Kyle and I will be selling our Knuckles McGee graphic novel , shirts and sketchbooks. Kristin will be selling her new notebook line. Seriously, if your at the con come by and say hi. Look for a big hand with eyes (really) at Small Press in SP38. Ahhh, good times!!

Sorry for the lack of updates, life kinda got in the way. We are working on a new book for San Diego Con with all new characters. Look out for it. Kyle and I have a series of audio podcasts and are putting them up by segments on youtube. You can find it at http://www.youtube.com/user/Vendabot.

When all of them are done we'll have it as a big mp3 to download. Also, I've been messing around with Digital Video and we will have little live action videos available on youtube. As many of you know, we had a large fire in Los Angeles the other day. Flames were visible from my work and ashes were falling by my window. I was able to take a break and get some shots. It was strange because the smoke cloud was covering the sun giving the area an amber light. You can't really see that in these pictures. I'll upload more in a couple days.

This is a logo I did for a close friend of mine. She's doing the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in honor of our other close friend who is battling it right now. I know it looks like Lilo and that is because our friend is a big fan of that character. This is my personal take on her. What was really cool was this was done entirely in Illustrator. I have always admired artists like Alberto Ruiz and Ragnar who seem to just effortlessly make these great masterpieces with Illustrator. I found it to be a very frustrating program to learn but with help from my pal Kyle I've been able to learn a lot.
